Week 4

It’s been Art Week for the whole school, and, In Year 3, we’ve been busy practising our observational and drawing skills. We’ve learnt how artists use shape when they are drawing as well as shading to show both light and dark tones. We sketched a selection of bulbs, seeds and leaves and practised our shading skills in the style of artists Katie Daisy, Sara Boccaccini Meadows and Dianne Sutherland. In our final lesson we looked at the work of Yellena James to inspire us when adding imaginative designs to photocopies of our original sketches.

In Maths we’ve been learning how to regroup both ones and tens when subtracting three-digit numbers and, in English, we’re editing our fables ready to publish in a class book next week.

A lovely highlight of the week was our Year 3 Prayer Service. Father John led our Prayer Service and everyone read their parts well and sang their hymn ‘Shine, Jesus, Shine’ beautifully.  It was a celebration of the presentation of Jesus by Mary and Joseph to the priest Simeon in the Temple.  It’s held every year on 2nd February and is also known as Candlemas. We lit candles to help us remember Simeon’s words and to ask God to bless all children of the world and help them to walk in His light.

Congratulations to our Learner of the Week and the whole class were rewarded with a Star of the Week certificate for their Prayer Service too.

Next Wednesday, we’re looking forward to the Commonwealth rhythmic gymnast, Saffron Severn, visiting St Joseph’s!  We hope to inspire everyone to be more physically active and raise money for new sports equipment for our school by having a sponsored fitness circuit.  Saffron will be leading the event and will give a motivational assembly as well as a Q&A session. All the class have sponsorship forms and can also create an online fundraising page through www.greatathletes.org by clicking on the button “Set up a Fundraiser Page”.

Have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes
