Welcome to the Year 3 page for our new academic year!

During this Autumn term we will be posting some of the activities and special events that we've taken part in.  In addition, our homework information and resources will be posted here every Thursday.

Year 3’s class saint is Jacinta Marto.

Jacinta was born on March 11, 1910, two years after her brother, Francisco, in a village near Fatima in Portugal. She was affectionate, energetic, talkative, and graceful.  Jacinta loved to dance, sing, and gather flowers which she would string into necklaces for Lucia, her cousin.

Between May 13^th and October 13^th1917, Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia were visited by Our Lady as they looked after the family’s sheep on the hillside.  At the first appearance, Mary asked the children to return to that spot on the thirteenth of each month for the next six months. She also asked them to learn to read and write and to pray the rosary “to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.” At first no-one believed in their mission, but by Mary’s final apparition in October, up to 90,000 people gathered with the children and prayed for peace.

Sadly, both Jacinta and her brother, Francisco, became victims of the great Flu Pandemic of 1918 after World War 1 ended. Jacinta was ill for a long time and passed away on 20^th February 1920. Francisco and Jacinta were beatified on May 13^th2000, by Pope John Paul II.  They were then canonized on May 13, 2017, by Pope Francis on the centenary of the first Fatima apparition.  The shrine of Our Lady of Fátima is visited by up to 20 million people a year.

Francisco and Jacinta are considered the patrons of Portuguese children, prisoners, and sick people, and we celebrate Jacinta’s Feast Day on 20th February.
