Pupil Premium
Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is additional funding provided by the government to schools to support eligible pupils and help ensure that every child has the opportunity to achieve and flourish, regardless of their background or circumstances.
The funding is used by schools to provide additional support and opportunities that address barriers to learning, raise attainment and support pupils’ wider development and wellbeing.
At St Joseph’s, we carefully consider how Pupil Premium funding can have the greatest impact for our pupils. This may include targeted academic support, pastoral and emotional support, enrichment opportunities, access to resources and activities, and strategies that help children to engage positively with their learning.
Our aim is to ensure that all children are supported to reach their potential, develop confidence and resilience, and flourish both academically and personally.
Further information about how we use our Pupil Premium funding, including our Pupil Premium Strategy, can be found on this page.
Eligibility Criteria
Schools receive Pupil Premium funding based on specific groups of children:
- Free School Meals (FSM): Pupils recorded as eligible for FSM, or who have been eligible at any point in the past 6 years (Ever 6 FSM).
- Looked-After and Previously Looked-After Children: Children who are or have been looked after by a local authority, or adopted from state care.
- Service Pupil Premium (SPP): Children with a parent in the regular armed forces, those registered as a service child in the past 6 years, or children who receive a pension under specific armed forces compensation schemes.
2026–2027 Funding Rates
For the 2026–2027 financial year, the annual funding rates per eligible pupil are:
- Primary-aged FSM / Ever 6 FSM: £1,550 per year
- Secondary-aged FSM / Ever 6 FSM: £1,100 per year
- Previously looked-after children: £2,690 per year
- Service child premium (SPP): £360 per eligible pupil
How the Funding is Used
- Not a Personal Budget: Pupil Premium is not allocated as a cash fund or personal budget for individual children.
- Whole-School and Targeted Approaches: Schools use the money for high-quality teaching, targeted academic support (like small group tuition), and wider strategies (such as improving attendance, mental health support, or extracurricular activities).
