The theme for Black History Month 2022 is “Time for Change: Action Not Words.’

“To get to a better tomorrow, we can’t just focus on the past. The past is in the past. We can acknowledge and learn from it, but to improve the future, we need action, not words. We need to come together around a shared common goal to achieve a better world for everyone.” www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk 

This year’s Black History Month in October is more important than ever. It’s not just a month to celebrate the continued achievements and contributions of Black people to the UK and around the world. It’s also a time for continued action to tackle racism, reclaim Black history, and ensure Black history is represented and celebrated all year round.

Here at St Joseph’s school we have redesigned our curriculum since 2020 and it is constantly under review as we refine and review the content that is relevant to our community and ensure representation for all of our children.

Here is our Black History Month curriculum offer for October:

• Listening to a native African Folk telling session from a local story teller in our community.
• Learning about the voyage people took from their native Caribbean islands to come to the UK
• African and Caribbean inspired art and artists
• Black British people within our communities and nationally to celebrate their work and achievements
• African Fashion Week – this is inspired by UCL university in London.
• Collective Worship – focusing on black history and promoting talk about equality and rights.
• Chosen books: The Proudest Blue, Look Up!, Little Leaders, Young Gifted and Black and Little Leaders (men). Teachers will read and share these books with classes and deliver opportunities to explore them through art and acting/ writing etc.
• Teachers will prepare and access activities from a range of online resources to promote and education black history and achievement.

Black History on the BBC

Children’s education series discussing the influence of black people on the world aimed at a primary school audience. Clips from the Black Britons programme give an introduction to the history of black people in Britain, from the Romans, through the slave trade to the end of the Second World War.
