Class News (7.10.22)

We’re at the end of another good week for Year 5!  At the beginning of the week, we had another good set of results with our spellings on vowel suffix endings and identified them in other subjects too.

In Maths we’ve been investigating negative numbers and solving word problems involving temperatures and next week we’re looking at place value with up to three decimal places in Maths.

In English we’ve planned and written our own short stories in the style of Neil Gaiman’s ‘The Wolves in the Walls’. Our stories involve elephants in the walls and we’ve really enjoyed discussing our ideas with each other and planning each stage of the story. Our focus was on using multi-clause sentences with co-ordinating conjunctions and improving our punctuation for direct speech.

In RE we’ve studied some of the beliefs and Festivals of the Jewish faith by learning about the significance of the Festival of Passover.  We’ve watched videos from BBC Teach to support our learning and to hear from Jewish children how they practise their faith. We’ve looked at the importance of the Seder plate during the Festival and the Shema prayer. In our History Topic work we’ve finished our work on the importance of the river Nile to the ancient Egyptians and are looking at other aspects of Egyptian life 5,000 years ago.

On Tuesday afternoon we celebrated our whole school Mass at St Joseph’s church and it was a lovely service. The Year 5 members of the choir did us proud and sang beautifully. Our week finished with a second Buddy Assembly where Year 6 presented their buddies from Reception to the rest of the class.  They told us all about their buddies and pledged to support them throughout this year.

Many congratulations to our writer and stars of the week. I hope you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you next week. Take care.

Best wishes

Mrs Howard
