It’s been a slightly more normal week this week as we didn’t have any assemblies to practise or perform, so we’ve been working as hard as ever in all subjects.

In English this week we started a new unit using the book ‘Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You’.  It’s a great book with fantastic illustrations which we’ve all enjoyed looking at.  We’ll be using it to write reports but our first couple of pieces of work have been vocabulary building and writing great descriptions to create a poem and a diary entry.

In maths, we’ve seen an end to fractions (for now – they will be back, I’m afraid!) and have moved on to multiplication using formal methods.  We’ve practised by using the grid method and expanded vertical method before consolidating ‘column’ method.  Confidence has grown as the week has gone on, so I’m sure everyone will be fully confident next week.

We enjoyed learning about rationing in history and had fun looking at just how much each child was entitled to by weighing out butter, jam, sweets and sugar.  I think some children were quite surprised by the quantities, especially when we thought about how many ways we use things like butter and sugar.  If any of Year 6 are cooking breakfast this weekend, they might like to weigh out things like bacon to see how much they would have had for a week – 115g was the bacon ration, 3 eggs for the week and 115g of cheese.  We’ll be investigating recipes next week and seeing how we would manage with rationing.

We have now completed our second RE topic for this term and next week will be moving on to Expectations, which will lead us through Advent – yes, it is nearly that time already!!
