Year 6, Autumn 1, Week 5

And suddenly it’s October!

In RE we have started our new topic of Vocation and Commitment.  We have begun by thinking about jobs which involve service, vocation and commitment and the class have designed advertisement posters listing the qualities that they think are needed.

We have started a new writing unit this week; this one is based on a beautiful picture book called ‘Wisp – a Story of Hope’.  We’ve all loved looking at the illustrations and the story is really moving.  Year 6 are using it as a basis for writing work with metaphors and looking at how writing needs a rhythm, which can be created through careful use of single and multi-clause sentences.

In maths this week we started by looking at common multiples and factors, as well as some revision of prime and square numbers.  Today, we have moved on to everyone’s favourite – fractions!  Fractions are everywhere in real life – think of that pizza you’ll be slicing up this weekend – so they’re not as scary as everyone thinks.  Relax and enjoy finding common factors to simplify your fractions – something to think about while munching that weekend pizza!  Eighths, sixths or quarters…the choice is yours.
