Year 5 Class News (20.5.22)

We’ve had a busy week celebrating International Week at St Joseph’s.  On Monday you all came to school wearing either your national dress or the colours of your country.

In your PE lesson this week you learnt about Bhangra dancing and in music you listened to a wide range of music from different areas of the world ranging from Florence Price to Fela Sowande and Chopin.

In our Art and D&T lessons this week we researched one of the oldest forms of art in the world – Aboriginal art. We sketched our own interpretations of a range of Australian animals in the style of Aboriginal art and used symbols to represent the landscape in our sketchbooks. Then, during the week, we re-produced these onto

t-shirts using fabric paints and cotton buds to help us create the dot effect that you see in many Aboriginal paintings.

In English we’ve been writing our own stories based on two paintings ‘The Lion Hunt’ by Rubens and ‘Tiger in a Storm’ by Rousseau. We’ve used drama and worked with a partner to help us develop our storylines and link our paragraphs together with effective description and dialogue.

On Thursday we had our International Food celebration and one of our parents helped us create some delicious Italian Bigne in the morning.  We had great fun filling and then decorating them with different creams and toppings.  Later in the afternoon, other parents created a delicious spread of wonderful food from our varied cultures and traditions at St Joseph’s for us to sample.

Finally, today we celebrated all that we’d learned in a whole school assembly. Some classes danced, some sang and Year 5 showed their fabulous Aboriginal t-shirts. It was a very memorable day!

Many congratulations to our Writer and Stars of the Week. Have a good weekend and we’ll see you back in school on Monday.  Take care and stay safe.

Best wishes
