Class News (14.10.22)

Well done on a great week Year 5!  It’s been a very busy one too as we’ve been celebrating Black History week as well as doing our Art project for Art week.

Our Art has linked really well with the whole school’s Black History week because some of the artists we’ve been looking at such like Sonia Boyce and Chila Kumari Singh Burman are British and black.  We’ve created self-portraits using a multi-media approach in the style of Chila Burman.  We used photos of ourselves to draw our own portraits and then we used tracing paper to write a short poem over the outline of our portraits.  We created backgrounds for our portraits using either a paint wash, collage pieces or different large shapes.  We then transferred our poem portraits onto the backgrounds by using carbon paper or by just writing onto it.

We’ve also been looking at the life and achievements of the British space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock to link with both our Science topic on Space and Black History.  We created fact files which are now on our class Science display.

In our Maths we’ve moved onto decimal numbers and their relationship to fractions as well as ordering and comparing decimals up to 2 decimal places.

In English we’ve started to explore The Monsterology Handbook by looking at a wide range of new vocabulary to help develop our writing skills.  You’ve enjoyed planning diary entries about the discovery of a new fabulous creature called a Nue.

We finished our week off with a lovely celebration of Black History and all the activities that each class has been doing.  It was a very memorable event because many children were dressed in traditional African or Caribbean dress and some parents joined them too to tell us about their costumes.  Year 5 presented all their work so well and we enjoyed seeing what other classes had prepared.

Finally, well done to our writer and stars of the week!  Have a super weekend and I look forward to seeing you next week in class.

Best wishes

Mrs Howard
