Class News (28.4.23)

Welcome to our round up of Year 5 news for this week and the highlight for us all was yesterday and our Prayer Service. The theme was based on living life to the full as we approach the fourth Sunday of Easter.  The service was led by Father John and Mrs O’Connor and the children read and sang beautifully with Ms Gunn on accompaniment.  Well done everyone!

In Maths we’ve been learning about calculating and comparing the area of rectangles including squares using standard units, square centimetres and metres and estimating the area of irregular shapes.

In English we’ve started to read a new book by Nicola Davies called ‘The Promise’.  It has a very powerful environmental message and links to our Science and Geography topics really well.

In the latter we’ve been discussing and investigating renewable sources of energy which produce electricity without being too expensive and, more importantly, not causing harm to our planet.

In Science we’ve started our new topic, Living Things and their habitats, by investigating the life cycles of amphibians and mammals and we’ll be looking at the life cycles of birds next.

In PE we took part in a cricket workshop on Tuesday and had the opportunity to practise our catching and bowling skills on the playing field before playing a short game of cricket. Next week we’ll be continuing with our tennis and learning how to improve our forehand ground stroke.

Today we came dressed as our favourite and inspirational British heroes from Florence Nightingale to various footballers, the Beatles, Jacqueline Wilson, Amy Winehouse and Dame Deborah James to name but a few.

Many congratulations to our Writer and Stars of the Week. Have a good weekend and enjoy the Bank Holiday Monday. Take care and stay safe.

Best wishes

Mrs Howard
