INTRODUCTION

The curriculum is all the planned activities that we organise. It includes not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but also a range of extra-curricular activities. At St Joseph’s Catholic Primary school we ensure that the curriculum does not remain static. It is necessary to evaluate the changing needs of the pupils and the impact of economic, social and cultural change in order to shape an individual curriculum that is personal to the needs of the learners at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary school. Our curriculum enables staff to maintain high standards, promote continuity and coherence and promote public and international understanding.

The importance of a ‘Creative Curriculum’ and promoting a love of learning is recognised by all staff. Enjoyable lessons foster confidence, encourage the ability to ask questions and help pupils to absorb knowledge and skills. We recognise the importance of providing pupils with the practical, life skills they will need when they leave school and strive to make learning purposeful and linked to real life wherever possible.

AIMS

– To provide a curriculum which will produce individuals who are literate, creative, independent, inquisitive, enquiring and confident

– To provide a stimulating environment and adequate resources so that pupils can develop their skills to their full potential

– To promote a positive attitude towards learning, so pupils enjoy coming to school, and acquire a solid basis for lifelong learning

– To provide a broad curriculum with a balance between skills and knowledge

– To provide for different learning styles and abilities

- To ensure that children have a growth mindset in learning and life.

– To teach pupils about their developing world, including how their environment and society have changed over time

– To understand Britain’s cultural heritage and values

– To teach pupils to have an awareness of their own spiritual development, and to understand right from wrong

– To enable pupils to have respect for themselves and high self-esteem, and to be able to live and work co-operatively with others.

To provide a safe ,happy and aspirational environment for all with a curriculum that is rich, broad and balanced ,filled with exciting learning opportunities and life experiences that enables all learners to achieve, aspire, have their mental wellbeing needs catered for and to succeed in every aspect of life, now and in the future.
