Class News, Spring 1, Week 5

Double class news this week  as I was away last weekend and unable to put it on the website.  We had a fantastic visit to the Hindu Mandir last Thursday.  I think all of us - adults included - really enjoyed it and came away having learnt something new.  Jason, our host, was really informative with a lively way of retelling stories and explaining facts that all the children responded really well to.

Maths over last week and the beginning of this week has been based on 2-D shape and their properties.  So we have brushed up on our knowledge of the names of triangles and quadrilaterals, practised classifying them and finding missing angles.  We also practised drawing circles and working out the radius and diameter.  We have now started looking at the order of operations (BIDMAS) and how it can affect calculations and will be covering some algebra as a part of this.

In English, we completed our work on The Lost Words; the children wrote some fantastic and detailed acrostic poems as a part of this unit.  We are now on a narrative unit, writing a suspense story; for inspiration we are using the book 'Clockwork' by Philip Pullman, which we're all enjoying, as well as some short stories from 'Short Too'.

Today was STEM day so we mixed the KS2 classes and did a carousel of activities which the children all thoroughly enjoyed.  It was lovely to see Year 6 taking such a lead in activities and working in such a positive way with the children from the other classes.
