Class News - Week 6
Although this has been a really busy week, we have learnt so much this week. We have completed our Art week and Black History Week work.
For Black history week, we have done a great deal around significant figures that we don’t really hear about. We have look at Raven Wilkinson, Octavia Butler, Dr Mae Jemison and Charles Henry Turner.
Raven Wilkinson became the first African American woman to receive a contract to dance full time with a major ballet company, the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo of New York City.
American author Octavia E. Butler wrote novels about future societies and superhuman powers. Her books blended science fiction, mysticism, mythology, and African American spiritualism.
Mae Carol Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
Charles Henry Turner was an American zoologist, educator, and comparative psychologist, known for his studies on the behaviour of insects, particularly bees and ants.
In addition to this, we also learnt about the work of Esther Mahlangu and Ndebele designs. The Ndebele tribe live in South Africa. The tradition of house painting comes from the women of a family. A well-painted house shows that a successful family lives there and the women take pride in decorating using these bright, geometric patterns. South African Artist Dr Esther Mahlangu is proud to carry on the traditions of house painting and pattern design which began in Ndebele culture but she has also transferred her work to canvases and other objects.
In our English lessons this week, we have been looking at the significant footballer Marus Rashford. Marcus wrote a letter to all MPS stating that he was worried that there were lots of children in the UK who weren’t getting enough to eat. He said that his mum had worked hard when he was younger but that it was still difficult to have enough food for the whole family. Marcus was worried about a decision to stop a project that helped to give meals to children who are in school. His letter to the government played a big part in making them change their minds.
WELL DONE YEAR 4! This week it was really hard to choose writer of the week as you all worked really hard.
