Class News (6.1.23)
Happy New Year! Welcome back to our Spring Term in Year 5. I can’t believe that we’re almost half way through the year! It was lovely to see you all back in class and to hear about your Christmastime.
We’ve started the term with two new Topics in History and Geography. In the former, we began our’ Raider & Traders: Vikings’ topic by finding out about an archaeological discovery. In 1831 a large number of chess gaming pieces were found on the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. To this day, we don’t know if they were lost or hidden by a merchant or someone of importance during the 12th century when the Vikings were living there. We investigated the intricate designs of the pieces and then designed our own Lewis chessmen (see our photos below). We used air-drying clay to make our chessmen and are hoping that, when they’re ready, we’ll be able to create a board and play chess.
In the latter Geography topic on North America, we investigated how many countries there are in the continent and what the temperature might be like in Alaska and then compared it to St Lucia’s temperature. There are 23 countries in the continent and we completed maps to help us remember them all as well.
We celebrated our Epiphany Mass today. The service was led by Father John with Year 6 doing the readings. They read very well and the choir accompanied the hymns beautifully.
Many congratulations to our Stars of the Week. We’ll have a writer of the week next week as well.
Have a lovely weekend and I’ll see you back in school on Monday. Please note the change of PE this term. It takes place on Mondays and Thursdays now so please have your kit in this Monday. Many thanks.
Best wishes
Mrs Howard
