Class News (13.1.23)
Today at St Joseph’s we raised funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital by having a cake sale. It was organised by Year 6 and proved to be very popular indeed! In addition, everyone came to school wearing with pyjamas or onesies to celebrate our love for reading here at St Joseph’s. As you can imagine, we had a very colourful Celebration Assembly this afternoon as we celebrated our writers and stars of the week!
In English we’ve been celebrating our love for reading by continuing our work on ‘The Lost Words’ which is a book of poems or spells describing the loss of words from nature that no longer appear in the Oxford Children’s dictionary. We’ve been studying an acrostic poem called ‘Raven’ which the children enjoy read aloud with wonderful expression. During the week we’ve created a ‘black-out- poem by highlighting key words and phrases that really impressed us from the book to bring to people’s attention the words that had been lost. We’ve spent the rest of the week studying ‘Raven’ in depth to help us create our own acrostic poem on an animal.
In Maths we’ve been continuing with fractions and have been converting improper fractions into mixed number fractions and vice versa.
In History we’re asking the question of whether the Vikings were Raiders or Traders and we’ll continue exploring this further next week. In Geography we’re investigating the continent of North America and discussing the different climate zones and in Science we’re focusing on the properties of different materials and how they can be changed.
Many congratulations to our Stars and writer of the Week. Have a lovely weekend and I’ll see you back in school on Monday.
Best wishes
Mrs Howard
