Week 1

Welcome back to our final term in Year 5!  We’ve had a busy start to the term and we have lots of exciting and interesting activities to do in the coming weeks!

Our week began on a sombre note on Tuesday with the sad news of the death of Pope Francis.  A whole school reflection was held in the afternoon and throughout the week we’ve been remembering his legacy and giving thanks for all the support he gave to the poor during his Papacy. We’ve written prayers for him and these will be put into our class Prayer and Liturgy Book.

In Maths we’ve started to investigate units of measure and next week we’ll be practising how to convert between units of measure from a large unit to a smaller unit by multiplying and then dividing when converting from a small unit to a bigger unit.

Our new text in English focuses on explanation texts and we have just started looking at the fascinating and beautifully illustrated ‘The Lost Book of Adventure’ by Teddy Keen.  It’s a book that shows the writings and drawings of a mysterious adventurer who visits all kinds of exciting places – from the jungle to the Artic and then a desert island.  Over the coming weeks we’ll be writing a guide for surviving on a desert island as well as an explanation text on how to build a raft!

I'm looking forward to seeing what ideas and tips Year 5 have!

In RE we’ve discussed and written about the Resurrection of Jesus by comparing three extracts from different Gospels and will be starting our next unit on Pentecost after our week on Islam.

Our History topic is looking at the legacy of the ancient Greeks - from governance to philosophy and then Greek gods and goddesses - and in Science we’re continuing to investigate the properties of materials.

Many congratulations to our Writer and Stars of the Week. Have a good weekend and I’ll see you back in school on Monday.

Best wishes

Mrs Howard
