Week 6

Hola! What a fabulous end to a busy week!

Today was our whole school celebration of Spain’s National Day. In Spain, it’s a day of parades and commemorates the date in 1492 when Christopher Columbus, or Cristobal Colon, as he is known in Spain, arrived in the Americas in the hope of finding a route to the East Indies and Asia.

First of all, we came dressed in red and yellow to represent the colours of the national flag and we took the register in Spanish. We researched the life of Christopher Columbus and how he introduced many foods into Europe from the Americas and which we still eat today. One of the highlights was when we learnt a very famous dance called the Flamenco. It was great fun and we were very happy when we got all the complicated steps right as you’ll see in our photos.

The day before (Thursday) we had another special occasion that we shared with parents.  It was our Year 5 Prayer Service. The theme of our Prayer Service was linked to our RE Family unit on Ourselves. We focused on the importance of us all being made in the image of God and that we have to use our talents and qualities in a positive way as God would want us to. During the service, we gave thanks for our uniqueness and differences and prayed that God would give us the strength and courage to use our talents and good qualities even when it was hard to do so. We finished our service with a hymn celebrating Mary because this is the month of the Rosary and her good actions are an excellent example to follow.

In our Maths, we’ve moved onto decimal numbers and their relationship to fractions as well as ordering and comparing decimals up to 2 decimal places. In English, we’ve started a lovely new book called Tea Cloud Monkeys by Mal Peet and it will be helping us to develop our narrative writing. In History we’re examining primary sources to understand why Queen Elizabeth 1 used to have Royal Progresses throughout England and in Science we’re investigating the different phases of the moon as it orbits the Earth.

Many congratulations to our writer and stars of the week. I hope you have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you next week. Take care.

Best wishes

Mrs Howard
