Autumn 1, Week 8 - Friday 25th October 2024
We've made it to the half term break and what a busy eight weeks it has been! This week has been art week. The children produced some really interesting abstract art based on Frank Bowling's work and thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with colour, shape and texture. They also found looking at Lubaina Himid's life and work very interesting and especially liked discussing her painting 'Five' which is one of her revenge series. We had some great discussion in class, with some really thoughtful and interesting points made. Looking at Lubaina Himid's work this week also linked nicely with our Black History week work where we were concentrating particularly on British black figures who the children were less familiar with. In line with this, we researched and found out about the British footballer Walter Tull who played for Tottenham and Northamptom but who also fought in World War I. He became an officer in the army at a time when only white British men could train to be officers, so he was the first black British officer. Year 6 found him very inspiring and interesting and were saddened to hear that over 100 years after his death during the war in 1918, he has still not been awarded the posthumous military cross he was entitled to.
Year 6 have made a great start to the year over the eight weeks that we've been in school so I hope everyone has a lovely break over this next week and comes back refreshed and ready for the next few weeks of work!
