Spring 1, Week 5, Friday 6th February 2026

It's been a very busy and hardworking week in Year 6 this week.  This week has been assessment week so everyone has completed tests in maths, reading and SPAG.  Well done to all of Year 6 as everyone has tried their best in every test.  On Wednesday, the children were put through their paces fitnesswise as we had a visit from the gymnast Saffron Severn so that the whole school could complete their sponsored activity.  We were also lucky enough to hear all about Saffron's career as a rhythmic gymnast who has competed at commonwealth level.

Remember to keep collecting that sponsor money, Year 6 - the more we raise, the more new PE equipment the school can buy.  Well done to those of you who have already brought money in or paid online.

As well as assessments and fitness, it was also the Year 6 Class Assembly this week.  The children worked so hard on their assembly and everyone really tried their best with their oracy skills, projecting their voice.  The assembly was based on the book that we have been using in English - 'Talking History' - and Year 6 took us through 150 years of history with speeches from Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Malala Yousafzai, Severn Cullis-Suzuki and Greta Thunberg.  All of the children who read the speeches did so well with their pace, tone and expression.  Year 6 had also written comments on which speeches they preferred and why, picking out all the persuasive devices that had been used, as well as using their own persuasive powers to convince their audience of which was best.  The assembly also included our very own version of Room 101 - well done to the three contestants for persuading us which of their pet peeves should be banished and a special well done to the host, 'Frank Skinner'.  We even had St Joseph's Radio adverts before the Room 101 show began.

All in all, Year 6, an absolutely fantastic assembly.  You should all be very proud of yourselves.  I know I'm proud of all of every single one of you.
