WEEK 1 - 27|02|2026
Welcome back! We hope you all had a fantastic half-term break.
We have had another busy week in Year 2!
English
This week, we began our new unit based on Julian Is a Mermaid by Jessica Love. We explored the first two pages and carefully looked at the illustrations of Julian. The children wrote simple sentences about what they already knew from the pictures, such as: Julian is a boy with brown hair and Julian loves mermaids.
We then revisited the pages and discussed what the characters might be thinking and feeling. Using clues from the text and illustrations, we made inferences and created our own speech bubbles for Julian, Nana, and the three mermaids.
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about statistics and the different ways information can be presented. We explored Carroll diagrams, tally charts, and block graphs. The children also carried out their own class survey about favourite colours and recorded the results using a tally chart and block graph.
Geography
We started our new topic, Our Wonderful World. The children learned about the characteristics of the UK and labelled them on a map. We discovered that Cardiff Castle is a famous landmark in Wales, and many children were able to name well-known landmarks in London too. We then moved on to learning about human and physical features.
Science
In Science, we began our new topic: Living Things and Their Habitats. We explored the differences between living things, things that are dead, and things that have never been alive. For example, a baby is alive, a teddy bear has never been alive, and bananas that have been picked from a tree are dead because they are no longer growing.
We also started learning about habitats and different biomes, discussing which animals live in each one. The children chose their own animal, described where it lives, and drew a picture to match.
DT
It has also been DT Week! We learned about what makes a healthy, balanced meal and discussed the different food groups. The children designed their own menus before moving on to designing their own wraps. Their task was to create a healthy, balanced wrap by choosing a variety of ingredients.
The children were excellent, and all of the wraps looked delicious! We then had the opportunity to taste our own wraps, swap with a partner, and evaluate them. The children reflected on what worked well and what they might change next time.
RE
In RE, we began our new topic, From Desert to Garden. We learned about Lent and when it starts. We discussed the three key parts of Lent — almsgiving, prayer, and fasting — and how these help us to reflect on how Jesus may have felt in the desert.
This led into our class reflection time, where we created our own Lenten promises.
Finally, a special mention to our Stars and Learner of the Week:
✨ Stars of the Week: Taylor and Oseyemere, for their outstanding participation, resilience, and hard work this week.
✏️ Learner of the Week: Oselene, for amazing work in DT!
Thank you for your continued support. We wish you a lovely weekend and look forward to seeing you all on Monday.
Kind regards,
Miss Perone & Mrs Nicolini
