Week 12

This week has gone very quickly and I’m so pleased with everything Year 3 have achieved! It’s been our D&T week and we’ve been designing and constructing castles with our partners.  First of all, we explored 2D and 3D shapes to help us understand that we need to combine shapes together to help us build a strong and solid structure.  We investigated the key features of castles and incorporated them into our own designs.  We used 3D nets of different based pyramids, cones and cylinders to help us construct towers with turrets and then with our partners we constructed the rest of the castle and painted it.  We were very pleased with our designs!

In English we’ve started to explore fables and understand that they usually include animals as main characters, are set in the  natural real world, have a simple plot and contain a moral lesson about life.  We’ve read and compared two fables so far; ‘The Koala Who Could’ and ‘The Lion Inside’ both by Rachel Bright and we’ll be using those and others as inspiration to help us write our own fables.

In Maths we’ve continued with our work on developing strategies to help us with our mental addition as well as subtraction. Not only do we use ‘Think 10’ to help us add ones to larger numbers, but we’ve been exploring using ‘Think 100’ as well. We’ve also looked at commutativity as well and understood that, with addition, we can have numbers in any order to add them together but with subtraction we have to take the smaller number away from the larger one every time.

Congratulations to our Learner and Stars of the week.

We hope you have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you next week.

Best wishes
