Week 2
Welcome to our round up of Year 5 news for this week and one of our highlights was our Geography fieldtrip to the Lee Valley Park where we investigated what type of litter was being discarded. We visited three areas to record data and then in class we collated our findings and concluded that the most commonly found types of litter were plastic bottles and cans. However, we did think that the park was generally well-kept and maintained by Park Wardens and volunteers which helped to reduce the impact of litter dropping on animals and plant life.
In Maths we’ve continued with our work on converting between units of measure. We’ve learnt how to convert from a large unit to a smaller unit by multiplying and then dividing when converting from a small unit to a bigger unit. We will be practising conversion word problems next week.
In English we continued to read and discuss our new book, ‘The Lost Book of Adventures’, and drew maps of our own desert islands with keys identifying dangers in readiness for writing our own survival guide.
This week we have been investigating Islam in our RE lessons. We found out about the importance of Ramadan and the Festival of Eid-ul-Fitr and then the pilgrimage to the Haji and compared it to similar pilgrimages in other faiths. In our new History unit on ‘What is the legacy of the ancient Greek civilisation?’ we discussed the six different periods of ancient Greek history and created timelines so that we could compare them to other historical periods we’ve investigated at school.
Finally, in our tennis lesson we practised our ball and racquet co-ordination and then our forehand ground stroke skills before playing a serve and return game. It was great fun!
Many congratulations to our Writer and Stars of the Week. Have a good Bank Holiday weekend and I’ll see you back in school on Tuesday. Take care and stay safe.
Best wishes
Mrs Howard
