WEEK 3 - 23|01|2026
It's been a lovely 2nd week working with Year 2! The children have continued to impress me with their kindness, enthusiasm and hard work. We have had a busy week, exploring a range of learning across the curriculum.
This week in English, Year 2 have continued their work on Rapunzel. The children explored the characters in more depth by using speech and thought bubbles for Rapunzel and the Witch, thinking carefully about what each character might say or feel. They also practised writing sentences using co‑ordinating and subordinating conjunctions to add extra detail. To help them retell the story, the class created their own story maps using illustrations and captions.
In Maths, we have been continuing our work on finding the part and the whole. The children used cherry models to help them understand how numbers can be split and combined. They then applied this knowledge to use the inverse to work out missing numbers. Later in the week, they solved word problems by using the inverse operation to find the missing number and check their answers with confidence.
In History, Year 2 continued their topic “How did we learn to fly?” by learning about Bessie Coleman, one of the earliest and most inspiring pioneers of flight. The children explored why she is considered historically significant, using photographs to find out more about her achievements and the challenges she overcame. They began to understand how her bravery and determination helped shape the history of aviation.
In Science, we have been learning about materials and their properties. The children began with an ‘odd one out’ discussion, using their scientific thinking to explain why a material was different from the others. They then took part in a material hunt around the classroom, finding everyday objects and identifying the materials they are made from. The children drew and labelled their findings and described each material’s properties, such as whether it is stretchy, smooth, hard or waterproof.
In RE, the children explored the people who were present when John the Baptist was preaching. They created their own lolly‑stick characters to represent these figures, helping them visualise the scene and understand the different roles people played. The class also compared Isaiah and John the Baptist as Prophets, discussing how both shared messages from God and prepared people for the coming of the Messiah. The children identified key similarities between the two and reflected on why their messages were important.
Finally, a special mention to our Stars and Learner of the Week:
✨ Stars of the Week: Asaiah & Elizabeth, for their fantastic effort and positive attitudes all week!
✏️ Learner of the Week: Tabi-Mercy, for her brilliant writing using her senses and co-ordinating conjunctions in English!
