Week 4
Well done to everyone who took part in the Year 5 Class Assembly today! Your performances were a delight to watch and I’m so impressed with how hard you worked. It was a real team effort!
The theme of our Assembly was based on the Catholic Social Teaching Principle of the Stewardship of Creation. In our recent Geography unit - called ‘Why do oceans matter? – we learnt that, not only do oceans contribute to our climate and absorb carbon dioxide which helps fight global warming, but they are an important habitat for many plants and creatures.
We took further inspiration from Pope Francis’ letter, called ‘Laudato Si’, that urges everyone to respect and care for the Earth and all the living things within it. We wanted to show how human beings, if they are not careful, can harm our planet and its wildlife and used the words of Sir David Attenborough to reinforce this: ‘I now understand the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea. In front of us is a chance to protect our climate, our food, our home’.
Emanuel wrote a lovely piece of piano music for our opening and the rest of the class presented their ideas through a combination of speech, drama, dance and singing. All the dancers choreographed their own dance to a BBC Blue Planet video clip showing dolphins playing with plastic bags. It was very effective especially with the use of scarves as the bags. The actors wrote their own drama about the impact of rubbish in the oceans and linked it to the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. Everyone learnt the sign language and words for our song Tidal Wave at the end of the Assembly and performed it so well. I know that the audience loved it very much.
Well done to our writer and Stars of the Week too. It’s always a difficult decision to make because you all work so hard and this Art week has been no exception.
Have a lovely and restful week-end. Take care and stay safe.
Best wishes
Mrs Howard
