Computing

Intent
Our intent at St Josephs is to provide a high-quality computing education that equips all pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to navigate a digital world safely, confidently and creatively.
By the time they leave Year 6, pupils will:

  • Understand the fundamentals of computer science—including algorithms, decomposition, sequencing, selection, repetition, and data representation.
  • Use a range of programming tools  to design, create and debug their own programs.
  • Develop practical IT skills, such as using word processing, presentation software, multimedia tools and data handling.
  • Demonstrate strong digital literacy, recognising how technology impacts daily life, how to use it purposefully, and how to stay safe online.
  • Show growing resilience, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity through computing tasks.

At St Josephs we are prioritising skills such as:

  • Logical thinking, persistence and problem-solving.
  • Creativity through designing digital content.
  • Responsible online behaviour, including understanding privacy, communication, and digital wellbeing.
  • Confidence with technology, preparing pupils to adapt to rapidly evolving digital tools.

Our pupils are growing up in a world where digital literacy is essential. By building strong foundations early, we enable children to access future learning, careers, and digital participation with confidence and responsibility.

 Implementation
At St Joseph’s we follow purple mash scheme of work. As a whole-school curriculum, this scheme builds knowledge and skills progressively from EYFS to Year 6.

To ensure consistency at home we:

  • Parent workshops and newsletters explaining online safety guidance and school approaches.
  • Clear behaviour expectations for online platforms.
  • Home–school links through learning platforms, coding challenges and celebration of pupils’ digital work.
  • Shared messages around online safety, including how to manage screen time and responsible communication.

Impact

Children at St Joseph’s are becoming confident, capable and creative users of technology. They can talk about computing with increasing precision, apply programming concepts independently, and demonstrate responsible choices online.
