ADVENT ASSEMBLY
Advent Assembly
Today we celebrated the beginning of Advent with our tradition here at St Joseph's
The story of Christmas began long, long ago. Long before that memorable, special night in Bethlehem.
It began when God decided to create the world and everything that is in it.
The tree stood for the tree of knowledge which we hear in the story of Adam and Eve. At the end of the play the people heard about the promised Saviour who would come and save mankind.
For thousands of years the people waited for the Saviour.
Sometimes a prophet would come and tell the people that the Saviour was on his way.
When the prophets talked about Jesus they said that he would be a light that filled the dark world with brightness.
When we decorate our trees at Christmas, we put coloured decorations on them. The colours are important. Each one reminds us of what Jesus has done for us.
The candles are for each week of Advent – lighting one more each week tells us that the light of the world is drawing nearer as the light gets stronger.
Lord Jesus, help us to remember that it is only because you came as a baby on the first Christmas Day that we can look forward to this Christmas with such excitement.
Lord, Mary prepared for the coming of Jesus by filling her home with love. Help us to do the same.
Dear God, we are beginning to look forward to the birthday of Jesus. Help us to prepare fully by thinking about how we can help others so that we may become more like Your Son, Jesus.
