Proud to be…
We are so excited to be celebrating Black History Month this October. We have a wonderful opportunity to be part of the national celebrations and events to honour the accomplishments of Black Britons in every area of endeavour throughout our history.
This year there is a new campaign for Black History Month 2021 which invites Black and Brown people around the UK to share what they are Proud To Be – for a festival of celebration in October. And we would love our children and families here at St Joseph’s school to be a part of those celebrations.
This year we would love to showcase all of what makes us ‘proud to be me’ and we can not wait to see what wonderful traditions, special items, clothing and jewellery you have to share with us as we create a spectacular museum here in school, where we can share and learn about Black History.
The theme of ‘proud to be…’ is an excellent example of how proud our children should be of themselves and demonstrates that Black History is also British history belonging to us all. Here at St Joseph’s school this is just part of our ongoing work that’s built into our broad and rich curriculum that is inter-threaded throughout the year; for example when we teach WW1 and WW2 in year 6, the Romans in year 4, toys from around the world; both past and present in year 1, topics such as whose who in year 2 and many more opportunities that deepens our learning of Black History throughout the year.
