Spanish National Day
Buenos Dias! This week we celebrated our Spanish National Day at St Joseph’s. The children came to school in the morning wearing a combination of Spanish colours: red and yellow. In Spain it’s a day of parades and commemorates the date in 1492 when Christopher Columbus, or Cristobal Colon, as he is known in Spain, arrived in the Americas in the hope of finding a route to the East Indies and Asia.
The aim of our day was to introduce Spanish vocabulary to KS1 and to encourage KS2 to use conversational Spanish in different scenarios as well as learning more about the country and its history of exploration. Many of the KS1 classes started their days by learning songs to help them with their counting in Spanish. In KS2 classes created fact files about Spain focusing on the life of Christopher Columbus and we were served with a delicious Spanish biscuit called Pastissets de Menorca.
Throughout the day, each class had the chance to learn some Spanish dancing. Our lovely instructor, Julie, helped us learn a very famous dance called the Flamenco. It was great fun.
We had a lovely and inspiring day!
